The Importance of Sleep for Secondary Students

At Everwood Virtual, we recommend that our students prioritize sleep in order to be well-rested and ready to learn. We understand that sleep is more than just a period of rest and that the body needs this time to repair itself and for the brain to process the previous day's events.
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends that teenagers aged 13 to 18 should sleep 8 to 10 hours every day. Unfortunately, the majority of students are not getting the recommended amount of sleep, leading to a variety of health and academic issues. It's also important to note that the quality of sleep is just as important as the quantity. Students need uninterrupted sleep that allows them to go through all the stages of the sleep cycle in order to wake up feeling refreshed and ready for a day of learning.

When students get enough sleep, they are more likely to be attentive and focused in school, exhibit positive behavior in their interactions with others, and perform better academically. Sleep enhances cognitive functions such as memory and problem-solving skills, which are crucial for learning. It also helps students to regulate their emotions, reducing the likelihood of mood swings and emotional outbursts.

From a health perspective, getting enough sleep can boost the immune system, reduce the risk of chronic illnesses, and promote growth and development.
